The Eastern Cape Highlands area is ideal for the 4x4 enthusiast - it's known as 'The Wild Side of the Drakensberg' for a good reason! Steep mountain tracks (up to 2750m) and challenging river crossings test your technical driving skills. Our 4x4 routes and trails range from easy to very difficult.

For the ultimate touring adventure, see if you can complete the Eight Passes Challenge which includes Naudes Nek, the highest pass in South Africa, and many of the area's most scenic spots including Rhodes Village, Tiffindell Ski Resort, Lady Grey and Lundean's Nek on the Lesotho border.

Off-Road 4x4 Trails
In addition to the mountain passes, we can offer some excellent off-road 4x4 trails varying in difficulty from easy to extreme. These trails are only available on a guided basis as they cross private farmland. We can provide routes for all types of vehicle and standard of driver. Picnic lunches can also be prepared upon request. Examples are below. Contact us for 4x4 trail options and pricing

  • Gatberg - 70km - Full day
    Enjoy a scenic guided drive up to Gatberg 'hole in the wall' mountain. The adventurous can walk the last 500m to climb into the hole itself. A simple picnic lunch is included.     4x4 required in wet conditions.
  • Piet Se Berg - 25km - Full day
    You've got to be brave to drive up the steep gradient of this mountain, but the sense of achievement at the top is second to none. Spectacular scenery and a challenging, but slightly easier route down. Light braai lunch included. 4x4 only.

For a more complete experience of the area we can offer a wide range of optional activities including fly-fishing, hiking, birding, horse riding, river rafting, overnight camping trips and those that have their own vehicles can enjoy professionally guided quad and scrambler tours.
